How to cure heartburn (acid reflux) fast and naturally at home

Acid reflux or heartburn happens when stomach acid overflows into the gullet. If those episodes repeat multiple times, a condition rises - medically known as Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The main symptom is a feeling of tingling in the chest area and it usually develops one hour after the last meal. Sometimes, the pain is so intense that it resembles a heart attack.

There are many natural remedies you can try to cure heartburn (or acid reflux).

1. Rice

Rice is famous for its liquid-absorbing properties. Eat a teaspoon of raw or slightly cooked rice. It will absorb the excess acid and you will feel relieved after 15 minutes.

2. Ginger

Fresh ginger is a great ally against heartburn - it absorbs the excess acid in the stomach and helps in calming the nerves which are responsible for the development of acid reflux. You can add it to your meals as a spice, you can eat it fresh or make a tea. In order to make tea out of it, you add one teaspoon of fresh ginger to a cup of hot water. Wait for a few minutes and drink this healing drink.

3. Baking soda

Fill two glasses with cold water. One glass should be full and the other half-full and put two teaspoons of baking soda in the other one; mix and drink. Drink the first glass in order to neutralize the taste.

4. Fruits

Banana, fresh or dried, can ease the heartburn, while apples create a cooling sensation in the stomach. Apples contain antacids which help in alleviating the symptoms - an apple a day or one just before you go to bed should do the trick.

5. Nuts

Almonds and other nuts are very efficient against heartburn since they absorb the acid in the stomach. You can eat 3 or 4 almonds after every meal, not more than that.

6. Herbal teas

Chamomile tea efficiently neutralizes the acid. Also, St John's-wort is famous for its healing properties and it has a lot of benefits to stomach tissue. This herb has a calming effect, which is also beneficial since stress is one of the causes of acid reflux.

7. Spices

If you add cinnamon and cardamom to tea, they can help you get rid of heartburn. These spices should be added while you're brewing the tea, not after, when the tea is already done. Fennel is also helpful - chew the seeds of this plant few times a day.

It will freshen up your breath and keep the forming of acid under control. You can also make tea out of fennel - add two teaspoons of seeds to a cup of hot water and leave it for 10 minutes.

Beside these food habits, there are a few useful tips which can help you ease the heartburn. The most important one is: eat less, more often and avoid eating three hours before going to bed. If you get the acid reflux while you're in bed, sleep on your left side or elevate the head of your bed.

Avoid cigarettes, coffee and alcohol as well as fatty and hot food.
